eTown with Che Apalache, Aoife O’Donovan & Interview Guest Bea Johnson (Part 2 of 2)

For part two of a two part eTown re-airing, we’re joined by eTown veteran Aoife O’Donovan of the Grammy Award-winning band “I’m With Her.” Aoife returns to eTown for a very special performance with collaborator Jeremy Kittel, who co-produced and arranged Aoife’s Bull Frogs Croon (And Other Songs) EP. Aoife and Jeremy are also joined by a string quartet. Also with us for their visit is Latin and American roots band Che Apalache, featuring three powerhouse Latin American musicians – two from Argentina, Franco Martino (guitar), Martin Bobrik (mandolin), and Pau Barjau (banjo) from Mexico, as well as worldly frontman Joe Troop. Nick also sits down for a conversation with Bea Johnson, author of Zero Waste Home. Bea initiated the zero-waste movement and shares her tips for living a more sustainable lifestyle.

Aoife O’Donovan / Che Apalache / Award: KC Curberson-Alvarado (PART 1)

This week, appropriately, we have an especially international eTown show, one in which the performances and conversations were all so strong that we’re presenting it in two parts. Irish-American singer-songwriter Aoife O’Donovan of the Grammy Award-winning band “I’m With Her” returns to eTown, sharing pieces from her latest collaboration with Jeremy Kittel, who co-produced and arranged Aoife’s first new studio recording in four years. With us for their first visit is the Latin American and North American, Grammy-nominated roots band Che Apalache, featuring band members from Argentina, Mexico, and North Carolina (home of band leader, Joe Troop). Plus, we’ll visit with KC Curberson-Alvarado. Her nonprofit effort began as a local festival to celebrate cultural diversity in central Tennessee, but when the infamous ICE raid happened in 2018, her group became more deeply involved, now providing legal assistance, language classes, and so much more.

This week, eTown brings back two of our favorite musical guests - multi-genre band Lake Street Dive and Americana musician Shakey Graves. While the show was recorded remotely, we do have a very special collaboration at the end featuring a duet between Rachael Price and Alejandro Rose-Garcia (Shakey Graves). Both artists open up about the new music on their latest records and the process of staying creative during a pandemic. Expect lots of good music and conversation this week . . . in eTown.

The group is made up by the talented Luther Dickinson, Amy Helm, Grahame Lesh along with the three core members of a real eTown favorite, Birds of Chicago: Allison Russell, JT Nero, and Drew Lindsay. We also welcome eTown friend and bluesman John Long, who became immersed in the blues scene at an early age, traveling and living with blues legend Homesick James starting in 1970. Also, we’ll hear from this week’s eChievement Award winner, who co-founded a nonprofit that is saving the lives of countless women around the world.

Ani DiFranco is one of the most prolific, focused, and issues-oriented songwriters in America today. She joins Nick from her home in New Orleans to discuss and play songs from her latest record. Ani also partnered with musician and activist Zoë Boekbinder on a remarkable project to bring the issue of restorative justice and prison reform to a wider audience through creativity and music. Zoe shares stories of The Prison Music Project’s evolution, and we’ll feature some of the remarkable music that prisoners and former prisoners helped create.

Looking Back, Looking Forward: The eChievement Award with Ethan Zohn

Host Helen Forster shares the 2006 interview with former Survivor Africa TV reality show winner Ethan Zohn, who used a good portion of his million dollar prize to help others, combining his love of soccer with a passion for preventing the spread of AIDS. Helen also talks with Ethan today about what’s developed since being on eTown, including expansion of his charitable work, personally dealing with a rare form of cancer, and his recent foray into the world of medical cannabis.
