Justin Townes Earle / Emily Gimble / Interview: Jane Zelikova

This week’s eTown program showcases the famously raw and wonderful singer/songwriter Justin Townes Earle (@JustinTEarle ‏), performing some of his most recent original songs from his latest CD.

We also welcome third generation Texas musician Emily Gimble (@mlegimble), a talented young pianist, vocalist, and songwriter who shares her own special brand of songs along with stories of growing up in one of the most famous American musical families.

And Nick sits down for a conversation with one of the co-founders of the grassroots organization “500 Women Scientists” that promotes the importance of science in general while raising the profile of female scientists around the world.

In this week’s back-by-popular-demand re-airing, we’re joined by popular young bluegrass artist Billy Strings (@bstrings1). Whether he’s performing as a solo artist or with his band, the reaction to Billy tends to come in two varieties: “Who is this guy?” and “That kid can play!”

This week, we welcome Rising Appalachia (@RisingApp), led by sisters Leah and Chloe Smith. It’s worth tuning in just for those incredible sibling harmonies alone;

but you’ll also be moved by our other musician guest, Egyptian rock musician Ramy Essam(@RamyEssam), known as “The Singer of the Egyptian Revolution.” And the finale collaboration between Nick, Helen, and our musical guests this week is one of the most inspiring ever done on eTown.

We round things out with an eChievement Award story about a man who’s helping folks in low-income neighbourhoods obtain healthy food by creating their own gardens.

This week, eTown revisits a musical pairing with Austin-based singer/songwriter Bob Schneider (@Bob_Schneider), on his return visit to eTown to share music and stories spanning his varied career.

Also with us is eTown newcomer Joan Shelley (@JoanShelley), who joins us to share beautiful, stripped down versions of songs from her widely acclaimed release Over and Even, as well as a one-of-a-kind collaboration with eTown’s house band – The eTones.

eTown On The Road: JJ Grey / Cicada Rhythm / Melaney Smith (Books For Keeps)

In this week’s crowd favorite re-airing, eTown turns on the southern charm as the crew heads to Athens, Georgia for a very special installment of our “eTown On the Road” series. We’ll be coming to you from the legendary Georgia Theater, joined by both a local musical group Cicada Rhythm (@cicada_rhythm)

and our longtime eTown friend (and singer/songwriter extraordinaire) JJ Grey (@JJGREYandMOFRO)

The Mountain Goats / Joe Sampson / Andrea Rudnik (Team Brownsville)

Joining us musically is the beloved indie-folk duo known as The Mountain Goats (@mountain_goats). They’ve been making music since 1991 (the same year eTown was born) and we’re very excited to welcome them to the show for the first time.

Talented singer/songwriter Joe Sampson (@usetonaut), whose intimate, emotive songs have led to collaborations with Nathaniel Rateliff and others, comes for his first visit to eTown as well.

Plus we’ll share an inspiring eChievement Award story about a woman in Brownsville, TX who’s lending aid to migrant families in need, as they wait to seek asylum in America.

This week’s eTown encore program showcases the legendary soul singer/songwriter William Bell (@WBellMusic), known throughout the world for penning such soul classics as “You Don’t Miss Your Water” and “Born Under A Bad Sign”.

Also with us is Mexican-American punk rock pioneer Alejandro Escovedo (@aescovedo1), who shares his unique version of punk-influenced rock and roll.

Lots of great music and conversation with our visiting artists this week, plus a great eChievement Award story about a man in Colorado who uses the power of community service to improve mental wellness.

Jonathan Wilson / Steve Earle / Samir Lakhani (Eco-Soap Bank)

Joining us for the first time this week is Psychedelic Folk-Rock songwriter and producer Jonathan Wilson (@songsofjw). He’s an amazing musician, a sought after producer (Connor Oberst, Father John Misty, Dawes and many others...) as well as a proficient sideman (he spent two years on the road as part of Roger Waters’ touring band).

And back again for his 9th visit is the iconic and prolific Country/Americana singer-songwriter Steve Earle (@SteveEarle).  He came to eTown to showcase his recent tribute album to the legendary Guy Clark.

Rounding things out is the winner our eChievement Award - Samir Lakhani, a young man who founded a humanitarian non-profit organization dedicated to improving sanitary conditions in developing countries.
