John Oates / Lilly Hyatt / Helen Thorpe (Author of “The Newcomers”)

In this week’s back-by-popular-demand re-airing, we’re joined by rock/R&B/soul guitarist, singer/songwriter (and half of legendary duo Hall & Oates) John Oates! (@JohnOates) His latest solo project 'Arkansas' is inspired by the music and legacy of the legendary Mississippi John Hurt and encompasses other artists and styles that represent the dawn of American popular music.

Also with us is Tennessee-based singer/songwriter Lilly Hiatt (@LillyHiatt1) (daughter of John Hiatt), who has become a fixture of the indie scene in Nashville.

And Nick sits down for a conversation with renowned author Helen Thorpe, whose latest work, ‘The Newcomers,’ is a powerful and moving account of how refugee teenagers, many of whom have left extremely dangerous situations in their homelands, come to America to learn a new language and a new culture, in the hopes of finding a new beginning.

It’s an eclectic hour of music and conversation this week as bluegrass/jam band Greensky Bluegrass (@campgreensky) returns to the show along with Texas genre-bending rock ‘n’ roller Israel Nash (@israelnash).

We’ll also hear from about a couple who has been introducing tennis to inner-city youth since the 1970s as a vehicle for inspiring a lifelong affinity for learning.

This week’s encore eTown broadcast features multi-instrumentalist and vocalist extraordinaire Tyminski (@tyminskimusic)(you may remember him as a member of Union Station; he’s also familiar to many as the singing voice for George Clooney’s on-screen character in ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou?’ and as lead vocalist on Avicii’s international pop hit “Hey Brother”).

We’re also joined by talented up-and-coming indie-folk singer/songwriter Angel Snow (@ImAngelSnow).

Hot Rize & Friends: Jerry Douglas, Stuart Duncan & Sam Bush

This week features an impressive line-up of bluegrass impresarios. The legendary band Hot Rize (@Hot_Rize) (whose members include Pete Wernick, Tim O’Brien, Bryan Sutton and eTown’s own Nick Forster) celebrates its 40^th anniversary with special guests and bluegrass heavy hitters Sam Bush, Stuart Duncan and Jerry Douglas. Grounded in the bluegrass traditions of artists like Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs, and the Stanley Brothers, the members of Hot Rize have forged a path and a sound all their own since forming back in 1978.

This beloved and iconic band is now taking an extended, open-ended ‘hiatus,’ all the more reason to not miss this incredible musical gathering, which includes a special audience Q&A with Hot Rize (moderated by eTown’s own Helen Forster).

William Fitzsimmons / Raye Zaragoza / Bryan Ware (The Crayon Initiative)

William Fitzismmons (@wfitzsimmons) returns to the show with his a gentle, insightful sound (some compare him to Gregory Alan Isakov, Bon Iver and Sufjan Stevens). Also with us is a young newcomer, Raye Zaragoza (@rayezaragoza), an award-winning singer, songwriter, and performer known for her song “In The River” written in support of the protests at Standing Rock.

All of that, plus an eChievement Award story about Bryan Ware, founder of The Crayon Initiative, an organization that is reducing waste by recycling crayons and distributing them to art programs at children’s hospitals across the U.S., brightening the lives of young patients during their stay.
